The other day we were casually wandering through the twitterverse going from hash tag to tweep when we came across @SoapboxDxb. We loved the name and continued to proceed to thesoapbox.me. We've actually been to Speaker's Corner in Hyde Park, London- where the name "soapbox" originates from (traditionally the Queen would allow people to speak freely on Sundays, people would take soapboxes and stand on them, using them as a mini stage while people would crowd around).

We immediately thought that thesoapbox.me would be a political soapbox and at first glance it looked that way too with posts titled, "Hunger Strike Over" and "Mango Chutney Nazi (update on coins)" but as it turns out, Rami's Soapbox is all about transforming humanity through sarcasm, laughter and pictures he creates on MS Paint.

Rami Zahran is the comic blogger behind thesoapbox.me and is officially (as of this post going up) one of the funniest people we know (on the internet). Based in Dubai, Rami's Soapbox comments on everyday encounters (such as salik, dirham coins and elevator traffic), we love Rami's ability to make the smallest things actually make us laugh out loud (we refrained from using the word "literally" and "lol" here as he's commented on both). Rami told us that his biggest inspiration comes from Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report (we love him).

Check out thesoapbox.me and follow Rami on twitter @SoapBoxDxb, you will not be disappointed.

You snooze, you snooze - by Rami Zahran of Rami's Soapbox

The snooze button – the most dangerous of technologies available to the common man. A button so problematic it forces you to make irrational decisions when you are in a state of mind that isn’t yet ready to be taking on such important decisions…the half awake state of mind. “should I wake up and get ready??? Hmmm I probably should…wait hold on a minute…if I sleep for ten more minutes I could skip breakfast and still make it on time…genius now go back to sleep…” *ten minutes later* “has it been 10 minutes already…I should get up…wait…if I snooze for 5 more minutes I could reduce my shirt selection time and STILL make it on time…genius!” and so in it continues…all these intricate little plans seem very well thought out of when your mind is half dreaming, but you know very well you will pay the price of the snooze once you are fully aware of what just happened.

It’s bad enough we have to deal with an alarm, probably the most evil of inventions ever created. Just when you are half way through munching on that humongous house made entirely out of candy…KRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGGGG!!!!!! The alarm goes off …evil at its best…

So it seems like the alarm and the snooze button got together and decided to psychologically play ping-pong with our minds and cause us morning torture every day to which we succumb to gladly. They tag team us into insanity…I wake him up…you make him go sleep. Wake up/sleep, wake up/sleep….

Well joke’s on you snooze abuse…coz starting October 11 my BlackBerry is going to be rendered useless and all it will serve me for is as a large pocket filler…however I’ll be looking out for a new phone…and rest assured that the new phone…will be snooze button free…

evil alarm…rests on weekends…

We love typography and we love Arabic, but unfortunately the two rarely mix in the modern world (traditional Arabic has various styles such as naskh, thuluth, muhaqqaq, nastaliq and riqa). Generally we tend to see an "arial" version or the equivalent of sans serif in Arabic typefaces. Many brands in Dubai will translate their name into Arabic and use a similar style font to match their Western name. We thought Bloomingdales did a fantastic job of getting their typeface in Arabic and in English to speak a common design language.

Arabic type design and typography firm, 29letters, is reinventing and pushing the boundaries of modern Arabic typefaces. Founded by Pascal Zoghbi, 29letters is run out of Beirut where the firm creates unique Arabic fonts for newspapers, urban places, events and various businesses.

Visit 29letters for Arabic typefaces you really haven't seen before, this isn't your father's Arabic.

Creative design firm Pentagram had the opportunity of creating a visual identity for New York University Abu Dhabi. Their task was to make the visual id of NYUAD work seamlessly with the NYU branding.

Pentagram tiled NYU's torch symbol to create an abstract geometric pattern which emulates Arabesque design. Arabesque art originated during the rule of Abbassid period (750 CE). Abstract, geometric, organic and vegetal patterns as well as calligraphy became the heart of Arab design as it was considered haram to portray the human body.

We think Pentagram has done an amazing job, they took a simple symbol and created modern take on graphic Arabesque design.
